How to keep social media from derailing a personal injury claim

If you have recently been in a motor vehicle collision or some other type of accident due to someone’s negligence in Raleigh, you might qualify to file a personal injury claim. Before you do, watch what you say and do around everyone, especially when online or using social media. No matter how close you are to friends and family, discretion is important to prevent unnecessary complications with your claim.

Though your injuries and situation might make it challenging for you to keep in touch with everyone except through social media, you should try to avoid it. However, if social media is the only way you can contact your loved ones during your recovery, you might want to consider the following pointers on how it could impact your compensation.

Keep mum about the accident

Regardless of how you sustained your injuries, do not post anything about them or the accident. If you need to tell someone, try to do it in person or over the phone. The insurance companies are likely to scrutinize everything you do and say online during your case. Just as your jokes and photoshopped photos can be used to discredit your injury claim, so can your words. Do not assume you know how the defense will react or respond to your posts.

Do not delete a thing

You cannot control what you did online before your injuries, but you must remain cautious about how you manage your social profiles moving forward. Do not delete anything, even if you feel it could reflect poorly upon you. Even if the posts or online activity occurred before the accident, or there is a chance someone could misinterpret them, leave them alone. Anything you delete before your claim is settled is essentially the same as destroying evidence, regardless of intent.
