A motorcyclist is facing a long and challenging route to recover after he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Selma. The DMV and the North Carolina Department of Transportation expressed concern over the significant increase in motorcycle accidents causing personal injury and death across the state. Reportedly, 147 motorcycle accidents have claimed lives on North Carolina roads since the beginning of this year.
The state Highway Patrol also expressed concern because this time of the year typically sees many bikers on Triangle roadways. Riders are urged to wear helmets and other protective gear because they have none of the protection available for motorists. However, authorities asked both vehicle and motorcycle operators to share the roads responsibly.
The hit-and-run accident left a biker with serious injuries that included severe road rash and about 12 fractured ribs. It happened at an intersection, and an accident report indicates that a car struck the motorcycle that was stationary at a red light. Reportedly, the vehicle knocked the biker off the motorcycle and then traveled over him without stopping. The driver continued driving, and investigators and law enforcement are working on identifying and locating the driver.
